The Daitari Satyabhama Eye Bank situated in the premises of IMS & SUM Hospital is registered for Eye banking &Corneal Transplantation (Registration no.-8/2008 with DMET (Director Medical Education & Training) and with Eye Bank Association of India (EBAI) (No-INST-L-1712). The Eye Bank is a non-profit making community organization dedicated to the cause of promotion of eye donation and eye banking i.e. procurement, processing and the preservation of donor corneas.

Currently there are more than 20 lakh corneal blind people in India of which 30% are children. The present requirement of cornea is more than 1 lakh annually whereas procurement only around 30,000.Whereas compared to other states Orissa has the least corneal collection.Daitari Satyabhama Eye Bank is actively working towards creating awareness about eye donation among the masses in order to increase the corneal collection. The collected corneas are transplanted successfully to the blind people by the Eye Bank.

What is eye donation?
-Eye donation is an act of charity purely for the society and is totally voluntary.

How can we donate eyes?
-A person wishing to donate eyes should fill up pledge form of any eye bank and make close family members aware of their pledge. After the death of the person family members should call the nearest Eye Bank to fulfill the wish of the deceased .The eye donation of the deceased can be authorized by the next of kith & kin even if the deceased did not pledge his/her eyes before death.

What is an Eye Bank?
An Eye Bank is a charitable organization without any profit motive.They are purely functioning for the benefit of the society. All eye banks are registered under Transplantation of Human Organ Act1994.It is a criminal offence to buy or sell eyes.

When can the eyes be collected?
The eyes can be collected within 4-6 hours after the death of the person.

Will there be any disfigurement after removal of eyes?
No. The whole eyes are not  collected. Only the uppermost layer called cornea is collected.

Who can donate?
Anybody of any age can donate eyes. People with Hypertension, Diabetis, Heart diseases, cataract, spectacle wearers can donate eyes.
