Introduction

IMS & SH has an excellent Central Library, perhaps the best among all Health Sciences Libraries in India. The library has been carefully planned to have more space and natural lighting for the comfort of the users. The library is fully air-conditioned. It has the capacity to accommodate 200 students at a time. Besides the comfortable seating and reading environment, the library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of CD-ROM, online databases, video cassettes, books,

journals, back volumes of journals, theses, WHO publications etc. Facilities such as photocopying, fax, access to internet resources, online journals, e-learning and EPAC (Electronic Public Access Catalogue) are some of the special features. There is a separate audio-visual room, computer lab, group study area and private study area in the library. The library has all the facilities for the students to learn. It is committed to provide a world-class information support to its users.
 

Working Hours

The objectives of the Central Library is :
  • To acquire, manage, provide and disseminate health sciences information to students, faculty and research scholars of the constituent Health Sciences Institutions of SOA University. Currently these include Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing, Allied Health Sciences and Life Science institutions.
  • To provide timely, accurate and current information and materials to users for education, teaching and research.
  • To provide information services and access to bibliographic and full text digital and printed resources to support the scholarly and informational needs of Health Institution of SOA University.
  • To support and facilitate the research, learning, teaching and administrative activities of the University by organizing, maintaining and providing access to appropriate literature and information resources in such a way as to provide optimum benefit for library users.
  • To provide an appropriate and comfortable environment and facilities for the use of library services and for individual and group study.
 

Working Hours

The working hours of the Health Sciences Library are as follows:

On All Days

08.30 a.m. To 11.30 p.m.

On Public Holidays

09.00 a.m. To 5.00 p.m.

Administration

The Library is headed by a professionally qualified Senior Librarian and is assisted by two Librarians (Senior).  These Librarians are assisted by six support staff who are generally responsible to carry on day-to-day tasks in the library and ensure that the users are served with required reading materials and to keep the library tidy.

Location
The Library is located in the main building having different counters:

 
  • Circulation counters, EPAC user terminals, group study area, books & reference reading halls, current journals, back volumes of journals reading halls, computer lab, CD and online database section, internet kiosks, photocopying sections, fax section,  office of Senior Librarian and office of Librarians (Senior).
  • Property counter, private study area, audio-visual room, e-learning center and news papers and magazines reading area.
  • All users are required to produce their institution identity card to the security as and when asked for at the entrance.

    Rules and Regulations
    The rules and regulations of the library are as follows.
  • All Students who visit to the library must show their identity card to the security staff at the entrance of the library every time. 
  • Bags, briefcases, handbags, parcels, aprons or other receptacles are not allowed to bring inside the library.  Such bags, briefcases, handbags, etc. may be left in the property counter provided in the library.  Users are advised not to keep their valuable things in the property counter.  The library accepts no responsibility for the loss or damage of any articles so left.
  • Personal books are not permitted to bring in the reading halls of Level III (left wing), Level IV and Level V.
  • Books, journals, etc. taken from the shelves for reading should be left on the tables after use and ‘not’ to be replaced on the shelves.
  • All users leaving the library must show all books, folders, papers, etc. in their possession whether these belong to the library or not at the counter of the reading hall.  Users may also be required to open for inspection any receptacle carried out of the library.
  • All books/journals and other library materials are to be used with care.
  • Engaging in conversation/discussion/group study inside the reading halls is strictly prohibited.  Discussion is permitted only in group study area.
  • No user shall deface the library books by underlining or scribbling notes in the margins, etc.
  • Users should not reserve seats either for themselves or for others by leaving library material or personal property on a reading table.
  • Personal belongings should not be left unattended.  The library can not be held responsible for any loss or damage of personal belongings.
  • Loss or damage to library material on loan to a user should be reported immediately.  The user must pay the cost of replacing a lost or seriously damaged book or other item; in addition to that he/she has to pay the fine.
  • Smoking, eating, drinking (except water) sleeping and talking loudly are strictly prohibited in the Library.
  • Mobiles phones are to be switched of or to be kept on silent mode in the library reading halls.
  • Strict silence, decorum and discipline must be maintained in the Library.
  • Users should behave in a reasonable and seemly fashion in the Library and must not damage library property or disturb other users.
  • Copy right law should be strictly observed by all library users when making copies of library materials.
  • Computers are for educational use only. The use of the Internet in the library is for reference work. Accessing unauthorized sites, playing games, chatting etc. are strictly prohibited.
  • Library users should not change settings on the computers provided in the library.
  • No library materials will be issued out for undergraduate students.
  • All users must follow the dress code of the University while visiting the library.
  • Sitting on the staircases/corridors/lobby areas is strictly prohibited.
  • Users are required to vacate the Library at designated closing times, upon hearing alarm bells.
  • Users may not connect to the Library's electrical, data or telephone supply.
Notices : handouts or related material may only be displayed in the Library with the permission of the Librarian and in an approved fashion.
 

The above mentioned rules and regulations are subject to periodical reviews and revisions.  Failure to comply with library rules and regulations may result in the loss of library privileges and may lead to College or University disciplinary procedures.

Collection

Health Sciences Library is deeply committed to provide physical as well as virtual access to books, journals and other materials to the Students and Faculty. The collection of the Health Sciences Library in the area of Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Nursing Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Allied Health Sciences and Life Science is very strong.  The collection comprises mainly with books, theses, current journals, back volumes of journals, audio-video cassette, CDs, online databases, online journals etc. The collection is heavily used by the Faculty, Students and Research Scholars. Users can browse online journals in Intranet environment.

Reference Collection
 The organization of the entire collection is given below:

  • Level-I

The stacks of this level have the books on Nursing Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Allied Health Sciences.

  • Level – II:
    The stacks in this level have the books on Medical Sciences and Dental Sciences.
  • Level – III:
    The stacks in this level have the reference books on Medical Sciences and Dental Sciences. The entire current journals received in the Health Sciences Library are displayed under broad subjects.
  • Level – IV:
    The stacks in this level have the back volumes of journals on Medical Sciences arranged in alphabetical order of the titles of the journals. Also stacks in this hall have WHO publications
  • Level – V:
    The stacks in this level have the back volumes of journals on Dental Sciences, Nursing Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Allied Health Sciences arranged in alphabetical order of the titles of the journals. Also stacks in this hall have books on Yoga Therapy, Ayurveda, and dissertations.

Cataloging
Availability of library materials - books, journals, back volumes of journals, CDs purchased and available in the library can be checked through Library’s online catalog – the EPAC.

The members enrolled under the above category are eligible for access the following library facilities:

  • Reading Privileges
  • Photocopying

The rules and regulations of circulation are as follows.

  • Borrowers must bring borrower’s card every time when they visit the library to borrow books
  • Only books will be issued out
  • Borrower’s card is not transferable
  • The borrower is responsible for damage or loss of books
  • Borrowers has to return borrower’s card when they leave the institutions
  • Books are required to be presented physically at the circulation counter for renewal
  • Borrowed books must be returned on before the due date
  • Members must replace the book if lost with latest edition
  • Books will be reserved if there are no reservations
Library Personnel
The library has a good team of library professionals, computer professional, semi-professionals and support staff members who are committed to their work.
